Knights Knews
2009
Council Christmas Tree Sales
Our council sold nearly 225 Christmas Trees this year. Once again our lot was
set up at the Dairy
Queen parking lot on Milford Road, right across Bakers. We have several types of trees,
all cut down fresh. Proceeds from the sales of these trees go to our Christmas Food
Baskets. Trees were available right to the very end on Christmas Eve. Thank-you to
the owners of the Dairy Queen for allowing us to sell the trees from your lot.
Also, a very special thanks to Larry Donnellon for chairing this event. He worked
many long hours getting ordering the trees, setting up the tree stands, setting
up the trees in the stands, lining up volunteers, selling the trees, handing out
candy canes, tearing down the tree stands and cleaning up the grounds. Thank-you
to all the Brother Knights who helped Larry out. Our council raised over $5,400.00
which will be added to our general charity fund.
Council Christmas Food Baskets
This year, our council packed up enough food for 31 familes in need in the
greater Mildford area. Thank-you to John Rogers for helping to organzie this
worthy cause and all the Brother Knights who helped out
collecting food, packing up the boxes
and getting them ready for distribution. A special thank-you to Leadership
High School and to Adrian McDonald and her 30 students for collecting all those
canned goods. And thank-you for those who donated turkeys: Milford Grocer, Bill McGrath
Mike CheChel and to Milford Grocer and the Village Butcher for their support and
contributions. We couldn't have done it without you.
Milford's Concert in the Park
Once again this past summer, our council served some of the best hamburgers,
hot dogs and sausage at Milford's Concert in the Parks. Best estimates is that
we served 1260 hamburgers, 450 hot dogs, 400 sausages, 150 containers of popcorn,
75 containers of nacho cheese and chips and 80 slices of pizza (limited option
availability). A special thanks to Larry Donnellon who chaired this event. He
couldn't have done it without all the brother Knights who helped setting up the trailer,
cooking the food, collecting the money, and cleaning up. It wasn't all hard work as
we were provided with some great entertainment.
Detroit Tiger Game
On July 10, our Council organized a Tiger Game outing. Two buses were used to
deliver the fans to and safely back home. This year we actually saw the Tigers win
a game and some awesome fireworks. As usual adult beverages were served on the buses
and this year, we didn't run out. Great job Bob 'Skipper' Sobzcak for organizing
this year's game.
St. Jude Golf Outing
On August 22, we had our annual St. Jude Golf Outing. This year's event took place
at Beacon Hill Golf Course in Commerce Township. Monies collected from this fund raiser
will be sent to St. Jude Hospital in Memphis, TN. Congratulations to all those
participated and won prizes, but mostly for participating in this worthwhile event.
We even had great weather this year. Job well done Phil Parker and John Rogers.
Mentally Impaired Tootsie Roll Drive
This past fall, during the weekend of October 9 - 11, we had another Mentally Impaired
Tootsie Roll Drive. Our Brother Knights once again braved the weather elements
and collected over $4,300.00. Those monies will be distributed to some of the charities
local to Milford. Congratulations to Harley Thome for running the show and all the
brave Brother Knights for donating time to this event. Monies will be distributed
at a later time.
Texas Hold 'Em Card Tournament
Our council held a Texas Hold 'Em Card tournament during August 20-23 and November 1-4.
Monies collected from these events will be distrubuted to our general Charities Fund.
Great job to Bob Minasian for organizing the events all the Brother Knights who
donated some very long days and nights.
Trunk of Treats at St. Marys
Once again, on October 30, our Council provided security for the annual Trunk
of Treats at St. Marys. As usual, the weather didn't quite cooperate but our dedicated
Brother Knights stood out in the elements for over five hours providing security and
parking lot assistance to all those cars that were decorated.
Pancake Breakfasts
Our Council provided breakfast after the 8:00 and 10:00 Sunday morning masses
on November 1. Fluffy pancakes, eggs, sausages, biskets and gravy, fruit
cocktail was served, along with a piping coffee, orange juice and milk. A special
thanks to St. Mary's Youth Group for helping us serve refreshements and cleaning
up afterwards. We appreciate it very much and we appreciate Ken Gregory for
running the show and all the Brother Knights who helped cook and clean.

Tootsie Roll Drive and the remainder of the funds originated from our Council's
general charity fund . Rob MacMain, our Council's newly elected
Deputy Grand Knight distributed the checks to these charities. Cake, ice cream,
and refreshments were also
served. Thank-you for all the Brother Knights who attended and a special thank-you
to Rob and his wife Pat for organizing the social. Great job Rob and Pat. Harly Thome, chaiman of the MI drive
was not able to attend this year's event due to knee surgey. Best wishes Harly for a
speedy recovery and hope to see you on the golf course soon. But Harly passes on
his appreciation for all the Brother Knights who braved the weather and
dedicated several hours on their time on Palm Sunday weekend. Thanks much.

Lenten Fish Fry Dinners Have
Returned After taking last year
off, our Council once again sponsored the Lenten Fish Fry Dinners at St.
Marys. We served meals beginning February 27th through April
3. This year we did things a little differently such as serving
larger pieces of fish and bringing the dinners to our customers while
they sat and enjoyed conversation at their tables in St. Mary's Church
Hall. This year, we also had the help from St. Mary's Youth
Group. These fine young men and women volunteered their time
to bring meals and drinks to the tables; including
refills. They also helped bus the tables and clean up in the
kitched afterwards. And they even found time to sell desserts to
help raise money for their upcoming Appalachian Mission
Trip. Our Council thanks all these wonderful
hard workers and to Val and JV and to all the other parents who
helped out with the meals. Our council apprciates it very
much. And to all those who attended, thank-you for supporting
Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen's Fish Fry Dinners. Hope to see you next
year. We are considering adding additional choices to our
menu. Finally, our Council acknowledges Phil Parker, Doug Sordyl and
Bob Sobczak for co-chairing this year's event. You guys did a
fantastic job; along with all the other Brother Knights and their wives
who helped out at the dinners. We couldn't have done it without
you. Thank-you once again.
MI
Drive During
the weekend of April 3 - 5, our Council held it's annual
Mentally Impared Tootsie Roll Drive on and around the streets
of Milford. As in previous years, Harley Thome chaired this event
and as in previous years, Harley and his
staff of volunteers did a tremendous job raising over $7600 for the mentally impaired
in the Milford Area of their schools they attend. Like all
institutions that have some government support, there are cuts and the mentally
impaired citizens are one of them. In some cities
where these "special" children live, their special schools are closing or shutting
down. Special group homes cannot afford to stay open
and are forced to closed, and yes, there is a need
for teachers who teach and help the special
children. Monies raised from this event will be distributed to designated worthy charities
in the Milford area sometime in May or
June
Dave Morantes Benefit
Dinner On March 22, 2009, our
Council sponsored a benefit dinner for parishioner Dave Morantes.
The pupose of the dinner was to raise money to help offset some of the
medical bills that Dave's family has endured due to his motorcycle
accident. We received appoximately 210 reservations and with the
addition of walk-ins, we servered over 285 meals. John
Rogers says thank-you to all those who came to the benefit dinner and
to Perry Sinacola of Milford House for their oh so good bread sticks
and thanks to Wail Bamiek of Milford Family Restaurant and Oliver and
Peffy Hayman of Twist and Shake for their gift certificates. John
also thanks all those who made or donated deserts. Yummy
Yummy! We were able to raise over $6300.00 for Dave's medical
expenses. We're proud of you Dave for keeping your spirits up and
keeping your faith. Our prayers are with you during your speed
recovery.
Free Throw Contest On February 27, 2009,
four of our council winners traveled to South Lyon, St. Joe's Church
complex, home of the Fr. Battersby Council 7568 to compete in the district
free ghrow competition. Three of the four were winners and moved on
to the regional championship at Royal Oak Shrine High School on February
28, 2009 at 10:00am. The winners were Mike Varlise (10 years old)
who sank 17 out of 25, Danny Gieselman (11 years old) who sank 21 out of
25, Nikolaus Rackov (13 years old) who also sank 21 out of 25. Good
luck to all participants in Royal Oak. Sarah Wickman who shot 17 out
of 25, lost by only one basket and was not able to move on to the
next round. Better luck next year. Winners of the regional
move on to the State Championship.
Pancake Breakfast On Suday, January 4, our
Council prepared the Knight's Pancake Breakfast. Over 180
meals we served. Monies received from this benefit are
transferred into our Council's general charity fund. Co-chairmen Ken
Gregory and Paul Castigilone once again did a fantasic job
organizing, cooking, serving and cleaning at this event. Ken
and Paul thank all the Brother Knights that were able to help
and all those who joined in for some yummy food and
conversation.
